Do I Need a Water Softener and Reverse Osmosis?
You do not need both. It depends on what you want to fix. Most El Paso city-water homeowners want two things, less scale throughout the house and better drinking water, and that takes a softener plus reverse osmosis.
Match the system to the goal
| Your main goal | What fits |
|---|---|
| Less scale, spots and soap scum everywhere | Water softener (plus carbon for chlorine taste and odor) |
| Better-tasting drinking and cooking water only | Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink |
| Both | Softener + carbon + reverse osmosis |
| Well water with odor, iron or unknown quality | Test first, then choose treatment |
Things to know
- RO alone does nothing for the rest of the house. Showers, laundry and the water heater still get hard water.
- A softener alone does not purify drinking water. It removes hardness and adds a small amount of sodium.
- Hard water feeding an RO system scales the membrane faster, so RO-only setups usually need more frequent filter changes.
Our packages pair a whole-home system with RO starting at $2,650 installed. See the cost guide for every configuration.
