Seven things that affect installed cost
- Softener capacity. A 64,000-grain system costs more than a 48,000-grain system. Capacity should match household water use and hardness. How sizing works
- Carbon filtration. Some quotes are softener-only. Whole-home carbon for chlorine, taste and odor adds media and cost.
- Reverse osmosis. An under-sink RO system for drinking and cooking water is often bundled. Tankless RO usually costs more than tank RO.
- Plumbing and tie-in complexity. Where the main line is, pipe material and the distance to the install location all change labor.
- Drain access. A softener needs a drain for regeneration. A long or difficult drain run adds time and materials.
- Equipment quality and components. Valve type, resin grade, tank and media volume all affect price and service life.
- Dealer sales and service model. Commissions, advertising, financing costs and service plans can all be built into the installed price.

The price of a professionally installed water-treatment system includes more than the tank itself. Equipment, installation, sales commissions, advertising, financing costs, dealer overhead, warranty obligations and service structure can all be built into the price.

What it costs after installation
- Softener salt: you buy it as needed; typical bags are about $8 to $10 each. Usage depends on household water use, hardness setting, capacity and regeneration efficiency.
