What Size Water Softener Do I Need?
For most El Paso homes with up to 3 bathrooms, a 48,000-grain softener is the right size. Homes with 4 or more bathrooms or 8 or more residents usually need a 64,000-grain system, and homes with continuous demand such as pools or very large households are better served by a dual-tank design.
Two things decide the size
- How many grains of hardness you remove each day. This sets how often the softener regenerates.
- How much water you use at once. This peak flow is why bathroom count matters.
Step 1: daily grains
Multiply people × gallons per person per day × hardness in grains per gallon. A common planning figure is about 75 gallons per person per day.
| Example | Math | Grains per day |
|---|---|---|
| 4 people, 14 GPG | 4 × 75 × 14 | 4,200 |
| 6 people, 14 GPG | 6 × 75 × 14 | 6,300 |
Rated capacity (48,000 or 64,000 grains) is measured at a high salt setting. Efficient salt settings deliver less usable capacity per regeneration but save salt. A good installer programs the valve for your actual hardness and household so it regenerates every several days rather than daily.
Step 2: peak flow
Bathroom count is a stand-in for how many fixtures run at the same time. Two showers, a washing machine and a kitchen faucet together can exceed 10 gallons per minute. An undersized system drops pressure during those peaks. Our Standard and XL systems are rated at 27 GPM service flow at a 15 PSI pressure drop.
Our sizes
| System | Capacity | Tank | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 48,000 grains | 10 × 54 | Most homes up to 3 bathrooms |
| XL | 64,000 grains | 12 × 52 | 4+ bathrooms or 8+ residents |
| Dual Tank | Dedicated resin + carbon tanks | Two 10 × 60 | Very large households, pools, continuous demand |
Bigger is not automatically better. An oversized softener can sit too long between regenerations, and you pay for capacity you do not use.
Compare it for yourself.
