What Should I Ask Before Buying a Water Softener?
Ask every company for the total installed price in writing, the exact equipment and media, how they sized it, what the warranty covers component by component, and what it will cost to maintain. Use the same questions on everyone, including us.
Price
- What is my total installed price, in writing?
- Can you give me a price before an in-home appointment?
- Is that a purchase price or a monthly rental or service price?
- What is included: carbon, RO, bypass, brine tank, salt, installation?
- What would change the price on install day?
Equipment
- What brand and model is the control valve?
- What resin, what crosslink percentage, and how much?
- Is there carbon for chlorine? What kind and how much?
- Who makes the tank?
- Are replacement parts proprietary or widely available?
- Which components carry NSF or WQA certification, and to which standards?
Sizing
- What hardness did you test, and at my tap?
- How did you size it for my household and bathrooms?
- What is the service flow rate?
Warranty and service
- What exactly is covered for life?
- Are the resin and carbon covered? For how long?
- Are electronics covered?
- Is labor covered? Are service calls free?
Ownership cost
- How much salt will it use?
- What filters need replacing, how often, and at what cost?
- What does a service call cost after year one?
